A wonderful oil-on-canvas portrait of Ashton Hawkins, longtime counsel to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, seated before one of his own David Hockney paintings. Signed by the artist, John Woodrow Kelley, and dated, lower right.
Ashton Hawkins was a distinguished attorney and counsel to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he played a central role in shaping the museum’s legal and cultural policy during a transformative period in its history. He arrived at the Met in 1968 as assistant secretary to the board of trustees and was appointed secretary to the board and general counsel the following year.
Over the course of more than three decades, Hawkins advised on major acquisitions, governance matters, and complex issues surrounding cultural property and repatriation, helping to define best practices within the museum world.
Outside of his legal career, Hawkins was deeply embedded in the art community, and was a close personal friend of David Hockney and Andy Warhol among others.
