Joseph Meierhans (1890–1981) is recognized as one of the most significant modernist painters associated with Bucks County and the New Hope artists. His extensive body of work spans over five decades, and began with a representational Ashcan school and evolved into various forms of modernism, including cubism, semi-abstract, abstract, and abstract expressionism.

In the 1940s and 1950s, he exhibited at the Artist's Gallery in New York, where he held five solo exhibitions. Meierhans was a member of the avant-garde group American Abstract Artists (AAA), participating in exhibitions in New York, Europe, and Japan from 1946 to 1957. His works are in the collections of several notable museums and institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Society of Independent Artists, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Provincetown Art Association, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
