A rare wrought iron coffee table with a nested soapstone top by Gilbert Poillerat, circa 1940. The wrought iron base has an accentuated, scrolling legs, a shaped stretcher with twisted bars and a breathtaking, blackened patina.
Gilbert Poillerat is heralded as one of the leading masters of ironwork during his time. After graduating from Ecole Bulle in 1921, he went to work for master of the craft, Edgar Brandt. During his career he collaborated with designers such as Jean Royere, Andre Arbus, and Jaques Adnet. By the late 1930s, he had established himself as one of the most skilled ironworkers of his generation. His designs are highly distinctive and were most often produced, as is the case here, in single editions.
